5th Grade STAAR Math Reference Sheet FAQs

Essential answers on using the Grade 5 formula chart, volume formulas, and unit conversion questions.

What volume formulas are provided on the 5th Grade STAAR Math reference sheet?

The official Texas Grade 5 Mathematics Reference Materials sheet provides two formulas for the volume of a rectangular prism: V = l × w × h (length times width times height) and V = Bh (where capital B represents the area of the base, l × w). Students should understand that both formulas calculate the identical cubic units.

Can 5th graders use a calculator on the STAAR Math test?

No. General education 5th-grade students are not permitted to use calculators on the STAAR Mathematics assessment. Computational fluency—including multi-digit decimal multiplication, decimal division, and fraction operations—must be performed by hand using paper and pencil. Calculators are only permitted for students with documented IEP or Section 504 accommodation plans.

How do students use the base area (B) formula on STAAR volume questions?

Many STAAR questions give the area of the bottom floor or base layer (for example, B = 36 sq cm) and ask for the total volume given a height of 5 cm. Students apply V = Bh by multiplying 36 × 5 = 180 cubic centimeters, without having to calculate individual length and width dimensions.

What conversion factors should 5th graders know from the reference chart?

The reference chart provides all customary length (miles, yards, feet, inches), volume (gallons, quarts, pints, cups, fluid ounces), and weight conversions (tons, pounds, ounces), along with metric prefixes (kilo-, centi-, milli-). Students must practice selecting the appropriate conversion factor to set up one- and two-step proportional equations.
